Horticulture Course

Horticulture is the study of plants and how to grow them. This includes the different types of plants, the tools used to grow them, the soil they are going to be grown in and how to harvest them.

Horticulture is taught in S3 as a general introduction to gardening skills and the safe use of tools. Students will be given their own personal protective equipment to wear (overalls and wellies) and allocated an area of the allotments to work on.

In S4, S5 and S6 Horticulture is taught at two different levels: Level 4 and Level 5.

Level 4 is made up of three main units which together count towards the Course Award NPA Horticulture. It is expected that all students studying Horticulture will begin by passing the unit on Safe Use of Hand Tools.

Level 5 is for students who have completed the Level 4 course award and are progressing to more advanced work. There is a selection of units to choose from depending on the students' needs.
