English, Literacy and Media Studies

English and Literacy

English is the beating heart of the school. Your level of literacy opens the doors to success in almost every other subject. As you progress through school you will notice how what you do in English forms links to other subject areas.

You will be encouraged to read because we believe that those who read succeed. In fact, recent research showed that people who read as teenagers are more likely to go on and succeed, be promoted and have greater job satisfaction. Their private reading actually had a greater impact upon their lives and life chances than any other sport or hobby.

In English, you will be given opportunities to study texts: plays, novels, short stories and poems. You will write your own imaginative stories, informative reports and so on.

Media Studies

Media Studies is an option choice for S3, S4, S5 & S6 students studying at National 4, National 5 and Higher level.

The Media Studies course is a combination of film, television, advertisement and magazine texts which we create, analyse and evaluate.

The National 4 course is unit based and is completed in class. There is no exam. The S3 option choice covers all the content for candidates to achieve National 4 in S3.

The National 5 and Higher courses are 50% assignment completed in class and 50% exam.  There is a useful progression from National 5 to Higher where candidates can build on their prior learning, but this is also suitable to take as a 'crash' Higher, so no previous experience is necessary.
